SCHIZOPHRENIA PEER SUPPORT GROUP MEETING (6TH MEETING)

Sixth meeting of Sliver Ribbon Group (peer support group for persons with schizophrenia) was held on 9th may 2018 at Rajah Rehabilitation Centre. Peer support group facilitator Ms. Vincy welcomed the gathering. Dr. N. Pfizer, Psychiatrist RRC, delivered the opening address and briefed about the importance of peer support group. Dr. Damodharan, the medical superintendent of Rajah Hospital presided over the meeting. Mr. Abdul Shafeeque (Managing trustee, RCMT) released the 5th volume of ‘silver ribbon group’ newsletter. Mr. Sivadasan, Press club president, Chavakkad felicitated the gathering.

Key note address was delivered by Dr. Sebinth Kumar (Asst.Professor of Psychiatry, Alappuzha Medical College). He deliberated on the symptoms, treatment methods and reason for non adherence to medicine.

The official function was followed by group psycho- education classes. Mrs. Kavitha M.A, (Clinical Psychologist RRC) enumerated about ‘Psychological interventions in persons with Schizophrenia’. She described about the importance of goal setting and life style management for recovery.

Family caregivers meeting were co-ordinated by Mrs. Reshma and Ms. Anju, social workers, RRC. The classes were about dos and don’ts in dealing with persons with schizophrenia and problems due to relapse. Closed session of peer support group was moderated by Dr. N.Pfizer and Mrs. Kavitha. Members of silver ribbon group shared their experiences, strength and weakness and treatment expectations. The key issues discussed were summarized by peer support facilitators.

Peer support members were encouraged to participate in an activity named ‘Positive Self talking notes’. The objective of this activity was to improve self expression and self esteem of the members they were asked to write one positive quality or their achievement on a paper and stick it on the board. By writing a positive word about self, they would get a positive feeling and that will enhance their self-esteem. Members actively participated in this activity and reported to have a positive feeling about them

Best community recovery champions and exceptional caregivers were honored with mementos and certificates.

Peer support group facilitator Ms Sajana conveyed the vote of thanks. Around 200 members participated in the meeting. The function concluded at 3.00 PM with refreshments and talent show of patients with schizophrenia. The next meeting will be held in September.
